LAS MARIACHIS - PARIS, FRANCE
Aída and Fernanda, two Mexican women share much in common: both are classically trained violinists who came to Paris to expand their musical horizons. Looking to connect with their roots and make a living, they started to perform with mariachis and teach violin to children. Also, in Paris, where mariachi is often seen as an entertainment genre, they are challenged to gain recognition in both classical and folk music worlds.
To document how they navigate between these different circles, I took a natural approach and captured moments from their routines for several weeks. Documenting everything, from stage performances in flamboyant charro costumes to more intimate moments in rehearsals, auditions at the Conservatoire, and everyday life in Paris. Also, to highlight how both sides of their public persona carry equal weight, I photographed them both in a studio under the same lighting conditions.
This project is a portrait, it reflects on how these artists balance personal, cultural and professional identities with a deep connection to their heritage. It is also an opportunity to discover my own cultural voice, exploring migration journeys and finding my place in the photography community through my Mexican background.
